3 Common Problems Of A Water Softener System And What You Can Do

Occasional problems with your water softener system does not necessarily signal that it is time for a new system. It could mean that basic troubleshooting is in order. Here are some of the most common problems you could face with your system and what you need to do.

Water Is Hard

If the water softener is failing to soften your water, there are a few possible causes. One possible problem could be the time setting. Check the time setting and change it, if necessary. Refer to your manufacturer's manual to get help with your specific model.

Another possible problem is that you have a leaking faucet. Excessive water usage can push more water through the system on a consistent basis than it is ready to handle. As a result, the water can be hard. Check all of your faucets and the toilet valves to ensure they are not leaking. Repair any that are found.

If the hot water is being used at the exact same time the system is regenerating, the tank can fill with hard water. To avoid this, adjust your time settings so that the regeneration does not occur at the same time as large amounts of hard water is being used.

No Power

The water softener system needs power to operate. If there is none, it cannot regenerate and filter the water as needed.

If the system does not have power, start by checking to ensure that it is plugged into a functioning outlet. If it still does not work, you can test the outlet by plugging in an electrical fixture, such as a lamp. If the fixture works, the problem is not with the outlet, but with your system.

If the system still does not work, reset it. Depending on the system you have in place, resetting it can be as simple as pressing and holding down a button located on the head of the softener. If it is not located there, refer to your manual to get further instructions on resetting.

Salt Buildup

As the water is filtered through the softener, it is not uncommon for salt buildup to occur.  The salt fills up inside the tank of the softener and makes it impossible for the system to function.

If the system is still operating, but softening does not occur, you probably have a buildup. To resolve it, use a broom handle to push loose the salt inside of the tank. You can then clean out the salt and resume use of the system.

If any other problems occur with the water softening system, consult a technician.
