Successfully Eliminate Oil-Based Paint From A Granite Counter’s Surface

If oil-based paint spilled onto a granite counter in your kitchen, remove it with the following steps. Once you have finished, the counter will be stain-free. Keep it maintained so that it is not susceptible to staining in the future and remains damage-free.

Supplies Needed

  • towel
  • plastic scraper
  • rubber gloves
  • face mask
  • mineral spirits
  • sponge (with slightly abrasive surface)
  • bucket of water
  • granite cleaner
  • lint-free cloth

Remove Fresh Paint

If the paint recently spilled, blot up as much as possible by pressing a clean towel firmly against the spill. Do not rub the paint with the towel because this could spread it and cause a large portion of the counter's surface to become stained.

Use the tip of a plastic putty knife to remove thick areas of paint that have dried. Wedge the tip under paint spots and move the tool's handle back and forth. The movement will assist with lifting the paint. Do not exert a lot of force when using the knife because if the tip of it is pointed directly at the counter's surface, it can cause marks to appear in the granite.

Eliminate Staining

Put on a pair of rubber gloves and a face mask to protect yourself from exposure to mineral spirits. Spirits contain chemicals that are harsh and that could cause respiratory distress or skin irritation. Pour a small amount of spirits onto a sponge that has a slightly abrasive surface. Press the sponge against the stained areas and move the tool firmly over the paint. Add more mineral spirits to the sponge if any of the staining won't come off with the first treatment.

Once all signs of paint have been removed, rinse the sponge out with plain water and wipe the same areas that have been treated.

Clean And Dry The Granite

Ensure that all residue has been removed from the counter's surface by cleaning it with a product that is designed for use on granite. Use the product according to the instructions that are listed on its packaging. Once the counter has been cleaned, dry the granite with a lint-free cloth.

In the future, cover the counter with a drop cloth or plastic sheeting if you are going to be painting near it. If liquids ever spill on the counter when it isn't covered, clean them up quickly to prevent stains from forming. As a result, the granite countertops will remain damage-free and will continue to add beauty to your home's kitchen.
